  1. In UK politics, a loose union 1981-87 formed
  2. by the Liberal Party and Social Democratic
  3. Party (SDP) for electoral purposes. The
  4. Alliance was set up soon after the formation
  5. of the SDP, and involved a joint manifesto at
  6. national elections and the apportionment of
  7. constituencies in equal numbers to Liberal
  8. and SDP candidates. The difficulties of
  9. presenting two separate parties to the
  10. electorate as if they were one proved
  11. insurmountable, and after the Alliance's poor
  12. showing in the 1987 general election the
  13. majority of the SDP voted to merge with the
  14. Liberals to form the Social and Liberal
  15. Democrats.
